Travel Grants

The Executive Board of the Midwest Writing Centers Association is pleased to announce three monetary awards to support the scholarship, service, and conference participation of undergraduate and graduate writing center consultants. For the fourth year in a row, a committee of Board members will award three Scholarship & Travel Grants (each grant for $100) to support travel expenses for three students who have had conference proposals accepted for presentations at an upcoming MWCA, IWCA, or NCPTW convention. In October 2007, the MWCA's annual conference will be held in Kansas City.

Registration fees will be waived (or reimbursed) for the conference where the recipients present their work.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be undergraduates or graduate students currently working in MWCA member writing centers and must have proposals accepted at an upcoming MWCA, IWCA, or NCPTW conference. The MWCA board especially welcomes applications from undergraduate consultants and consultants from underrepresented groups (consultants from underrepresented groups may self-identify on the required application form).

Interested writing center consultants/tutors must submit an application form and a letter of application, addressed to Lisa Whalen and the MWCA Board, in which the applicant discusses some or all of the following:

  • The applicant's experiences working in writing centers, including daily consulting/tutoring, research, and/or administrative work;

  • Philosophy of peer tutoring;

  • Special contributions to the writing center profession, including tutor training, staff development, writing center outreach, applications of technology, service to the profession, or other unique activities.

The deadline for submissions is September 14, 2007. Send application materials via email to Lisa Whalen (Whalen@csp.edu) or conventional mail:
