Distinguished Teaching Award

The North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America is pleased to present the 2008 Award for

Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics

to

Jason Douma

from

University of Sioux Falls.

Citation

Presented April 26, 2008

To quote this year’s awardee, “Some folks develop an interest in mathematics after witnessing its power or its utility in modeling the things we sense, experience, or observe.  Others, like me, are drawn irresistibly to its beauty and elegance.  I love mathematics just as a poet loves poetry or a musician loves music.”  He consistently conveys this passion for mathematics both in and out of the classroom.

He is a past recipient of the distinguished teaching award at the University of Sioux Falls.  He has made significant contributions to educating future and current mathematics teachers.  In recent years, as a co-principal investigator of multiple Title-II-No-Child-Left-Behind-Improving-Teacher-Quality-Program grants, he has helped implement an “Activity-Based Mathematics across the Curriculum” program to improve mathematical and pedagogical skills of mathematics teachers in South Dakota.

As Chair of the Natural Sciences Area at the University of Sioux Falls, he has overseen significant growth in both staffing and enrollment.  His efforts to improve the mathematics program helped increase the number of students enrolled in courses for math majors from 69 students during 2000-2002 to 170 students during 2004-2006.

To summarize, in the words of one former student (now a graduate student in mathematics), “When it comes to the selection of candidates for this award, I can think of no one more deserving than Dr. Douma.  His dedication to his students, enthusiasm about mathematics, and ability to communicate material effectively distinguish him from others in this profession.  I am truly proud to call Dr. Jason Douma my professor, colleague, and friend.”

If your department has an outstanding teacher, please consider nominating that person for the section's annual Distinguished Teaching Award. This year we are asking that nominations be made using a form which can be found here.
