NCS Summer Seminar
Jennifer Galovich is organizing the seminar, with help from Jason Douma.

ACTUALLY DOING IT!: A Hands-On Approach to Computational Combinatorial Geometry

St. John's University, Collegeville, MN, July 19-24, 2009.

Have verbal commitments from 5 people, registration was planning on 20, still sometime until early registration closes.
Activities at the NCS Meetings
- Section NExT
  Had 11 people. Idea for next meeting: preparing a tenure file.
- Chairs' Workshop
  Had 9 people.
  
  Will do this only in the spring. Su Dorée will work on this, will need to have more details by fall.
  
  Idea for next time: mentoring junior faculty.
- Students Activities
  Students like fun, undergraduate talks, applications, "real world" applications, careers, giving talks in the spring after hearing talks in the fall, and fun.
  
  Reminder that we have $100 stipends available for a certain number of student speakers in the fall meeting only.
- Mentoring Panel
  Dick Jarvinen would like a mentoring panel next spring. Want to solicit outside Mentor Net. Panel would be mentor/mentoring pairs.
Other Section Activities
- NCS Team Contest - Jerry Heuer and Ron Rietz are continuing to do this.
- Teaching and service awards - Nomination files are kept active for 3 years.
- Graduate students - Jon Rogness at University of Minnesota is organizing a September panel for graduate students on finding a job in a non-research university. Su Dor$eacute;e is working to have the MAA attached to this panel in some way.

  - Section archivist, historian: Ralph Carr has many years of information. Gerry Bergum has a file of his 1999 talk on the history of his section, passed on to Ralph and Namyong Lee at the business meeting.
  - NCS Team Contest team: Jerry Heuer and Ron Rietz. We have some desire to have other people helping them.

Reports from Section Officers
- Secretary: Co Livingston
  - We will do a hard copy newsletter again in Fall 2010. This will require the information officer to get reports from colleges early in the fall. The new secretary will do the mailing.
  - Future section meeting programs should include the Section NExT and any pre-session workshops. This will alert people to these possibilities and, hopefully, improve participation.
  - Organizers of NExT, Student Sessions, any special sessions or workshops should work closely with the section secretary in organizing things. Co thinks it will work best if organizers of all but the student session collect the abstracts, using the submission form on the section website, rough up a schedule for their event and send it to the Section Secretary. The section secretary should make all room arrangements so as not to confuse the local organizers and to be sure it gets done.
- Treasurer: Randy Westhoff
  - Budget report reviewed. We have money.
  - Report on Joint Meetings/Officers meeting: Particularly discussed encouraging the MAA to offer cheaper memberships to newer members, like the AMS does.
- Information Officer: Shawn Chiappetta
- Student Activities Coordinator: Peh Ng
  - Approved $100 for activities/food for the fall meeting at UND, Grand Forks.
- Section NExT: Kris Nairn
- Governor: Jennifer Galovich
  - MAA is streamlining, saving on costs, not in panic mode.
  - Barbara Faires is the new MAA Executive Secretary.
  - Discussion of supporting the section in the governor's meetings. Feels shut out of the network, like the permanent staff are making all the decisions, no opportunity to discuss the section at these meetings. A good place to find out information, eat great food, and get financial help to attend the national meetings. Former governor Holte agreed with all this. There are more opportunities at section officer's meetings to discuss what's going on in the sections.
