Minutes of the Executive Committee

Present: President John Holte, Governor Jennifer Galovich, Treasurer Randy Westhoff, Secretary Joel Iiams, Information Officer Shawn Chiappetta, Student Activities Coordinator Peh Ng, Past-Present Su Dorée, President-Elect Jason Douma
Absent: At-Large Members Angela Hodge, Namyong Lee
- President John Holte called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.
- Upcoming meeting sites were discussed
- The Spring 2010 meeting will be April 23-24 at University of St. Thomas
- The Fall 2010 meeting will be October 22-23 at University of Sioux Falls
- The Spring 2011 meeting will be at Carleton College, dates TBD
- The top candidate for Fall 2011 is UM-Duluth
- The top candidate for Spring 2012 is Gustavus Adolphus
- Nominations for Governor, President-Elect, Information Officer and At-large Member were discussed
- Shawn Chiappetta volunteered to stand for re-election.
- Several candidates were discussed per each of the other positions.
- The attendance report will be forwarded by the Secretary to the nominating committee to help them.
- President Holte planned to call for nominations at the business meeting
- Vacant spots on the awards committees need to be filled.
- President Holte planned to call for volunteers/suggestions at the business meeting
- It was suggested that past winners of the awards be considered to serve on the respective committees
- Other positions in the section are currently filled.
- Ralph Carr is acting as archivist with assistance from Namyong Lee
- Jerry Heuer and Ron Rietz are NCS Team Contest Co-Coordinators. There was a consensus that some individuals in the section should be selected to be groomed as replacements when/if one or both of the current co-coordinators step down.
- Pending the determination of special events arising from Ivars Peterson's attendance at the Spring meeting, the Chairs Workshop planned by Past-President Dorée is on hold.
- Past-Presidents Dorée, Buske and Kennedy are considering a graduate student session at the Spring meeting. They recently served as a panel for students at the University of Minnesota.
- There was no update on the Mentoring Panel by Dick Jarvinen -- This may also be on hold due to Ivars Peterson's presence.
- A Summer Seminar report by Governor Galovich was postponed until the business meeting.
- Jason Douma volunteered to be section representative at JMM in San Francisco. Su Dorée is the alternate in case Jason cannot acquire sufficient funding.
- Officers Reports
- Governor Galovich shared her feelings about being a "Rubber Stamper" to MAA President David Bressoud. He encouraged her to forward her and other governor's concerns to the Executive Board. He also promised to have the minutes from the Executive Board Meeting forwarded to everyone on the Board of Governors
- Past-President Dorée indicated that the aforementioned chairs workshop could likely be replaced with a writing workshop led by Ivars Peterson. Also the speakers for the Spring meeting will be Ivars Peterson and Teaching Award Winner Danrung Huang. There was some discussion of Jonathan Rogness' offer to speak too.
- President Holte encouraged section officers to begin pushing PREP
- President-Elect Douma had no report.
- Treasurer Wetshoff did not have his formal report with him. He did bring up the issue of honoraria paid to student speakers. It was decided that the student speakers at this meeting should each receive $100. This issue will be revisited in the future.
- Secretary Iiams indicated that the attendance records had been converted to electronic format. The old attendance cards will be given to the section archivist.
- Information Officer Chiappetta had no report
- Student Activities Coordinator Ng reported that plans were in place to fulfill the wishes which students had expressed at the Spring meeting as to what kinds of activities they wanted. Scheduled for this meeting were a panel on Vibrant Math Clubs, and a session of Math Jeopardy.
- Section NExT Co-Organizer Chiappetta reported that there had been low attendance at the Friday Evening NExT activities, but expressed hope for greater attendance in the Spring. The NExT Session focused on Keeping New Faculty Fresh -- Avoiding Burn-Out.
- Governor Galovich shared a flyer for the upcoming Pi Mu Epsilon conference.
