The expenses of this competition are covered by a fee of $15 per team. Teams of up to three undergraduate students work collaboratively at their home campuses on the ten problems, under the supervision of local faculty members. The contest is intended to reach a somewhat wider pool of students than the Putnam. Problems and solutions from the 2008 NCS Team Competition are available through the links below. A listing of the top tier of teams and their scores will be posted here soon. The thirteenth annual NCS Team Contest is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2009. An announcement and invitation to participate will be sent by email in September to at least one member of the Mathematics Department of each college and university in the Section. REPORT ON TWELFTH ANNUAL NCS/MAA TEAM CONTEST, 2008 The twelfth annual NCS/MAA Team Contest was held on Saturday, November 15, 2008, with a new record number of 74 teams from 28 universities and colleges participating. The highest scoring team was St. Olaf College “Euler”, with a score of 97. Team members were Thomas McConville and Nathan Clement. Second place went to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, team “UMNTC North Stars,” with a score of 93; team members were Ya Gao, Li Lin and Zhen Sun. Scores ranged from 97 to 7, with a median of 40.5. The problems and a set of solutions are posted elsewhere on the NCS website, as are the names of the team members placing in the top third. Each college or university in the NCS/MAA is invited to enter as many teams of up to three undergraduate students each as desired. The expenses of the contest are covered by an entry fee of $15 per team. Over the first twelve years of the contest, teams from 36 different institutions have entered. The next team contest is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009. An announcement and invitation to register will be sent out by email in September.
