Citation: Described by his department chair as a magnet for the best mathematics students at his university, this year's awardee has guided numerous undergraduate research projects resulting in conference presentations both regional and national. By publishing in a variety of journals, including Mathematics Teacher, Math Magazine, the Proceedings of the AMS, and the Transactions of the AMS, he has shown his dedication to mathematics and its teaching.
He has an amazing ability to connect with students due to his enthusiasm and sense of humor. To quote one of his former students, "He is always about the students, and how well they succeed. He makes math fun and gets to know each and every one of us."
In short, he is the type of teacher any math department would want to anchor their programs. Students learn mathematics from a highly skilled mathematician, they are motivated to do more mathematics, and they are successfully recruited to pursue undergraduate and advanced degrees.
One such student, now pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota, says "it only takes one special teacher to make a profound and lasting impact and this can indirectly benefit many people; I can say most enthusiastically that it was Dr. Danrun Huang for me."
